GROTON (CBS) – A former Groton Water Department worker has resigned after he was allegedly caught making moonshine on town property.

Groton Town Manager Mark Haddad confirmed that distilling equipment and some mason jars containing alcohol were found at the Baddacook water treatment plant last month.

According to Haddad, the setup was simple, consisting of “a hot plate, some copper wire and some bottles.”

“The biggest thing about it being in the water treatment plant, was the need for water to cool it down as you were heating up the stuff,” Haddad told WBZ NewsRadio 1030’s Bernice Corpuz.

The police became involved shortly after a plant supervisor discovered the makeshift distillery.

“That was stuff that really shouldn’t have been in the water treatment plant. It wasn’t known to the water superintendent who discovered it. We decided to have the police come down and test some of the liquid samples,” said Haddad.

WBZ NewsRadio 1030′s Bernice Corpuz reports
Haddad, who wouldn’t confirm the identity of the worker, says the case is being reviewed by police.

“We put an end to it. It’s over. The public water supply was never in jeopardy,” he said.

Pure water not city water does make nice ice for your drinks but this is not the spot for a booze operation.
