Millions of people in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu are turning to water trucks, as house and hotel taps run dry. Drying lakes and depleted ground water are to blame. The drought followed a 62% shortfall in monsoon rains last year compared to 2017.
In the state capitol of Chennai 4.6 million people, hotels are rationing water for guests. All 4 reservoirs that supply Chennai have run dry. due to poor monsoons.
Chennai is one of 21 cities that a government think tank warned last year could run out of ground water by 2020. This year’s monsoon is delayed, compounding the problem.
Northern and eastern India have bit 48 celsius in heat waves. The monsoons are expected to pick up in the next ten days…but water volumes are expected to be short of what is needed.
