JELLYFISH LAKE ~ PAPUA ~ DELIGHTFUL PARADISE!

JELLYFISH LAKE, PALAU
An enchanting and mesmerizing paradise exists in Palau – judged to be the #1 underwater wonder of the world.

CORAL FISHPalau’s waters host as many as 600 types of coral and 1500 species of  fish.

The following excerpt is from MNN – ‘Where the jellies roam’ (link at end of blog).

Nestled within a lush forest on the Micronesian island of Eil Malk is one of the world’s most remarkable snorkeling destinations: Jellyfish Lake. The freshwater diving spot, located in Palau’s Rock Islands, is named quite literally for the millions of jellyfish that spend their days bobbing back and forth across the lake’s length.
JELLYFISH STINGSWhile many cnidarians are known for their lethal stings, the two species that live in this lake — MOON JELLYFISHthe moon jellyfish and the golden jellyfish — are harmless, making them perfect swimming companions. Protective stingers were rendered pointless after the gelatinous, glass-like creatures evolved in a closed environment lacking in predators …

‘Diving in Jellyfish Lake’, published on Apr 18, 2013,  Welcome to Jellyfish Lake!  Population: millions!  It’s about as unique as a dive location can get … and our crew can safely swim amongst its cnidarian residents since their stings are harmless to humans.  Time for a little dive in jellyfish soup!

SAVE THE RAIN APP – FIND YOUR OWN HOUSE!

SAVE THE RAIN

IMPORTANT NOTE:  IN ORDER TO USE THIS APP YOU MUST ACCESS THIS BLOG SITE BY USING GOOGLE CHROME, SAFARI, FIREFOX OR INTERNET EXPLORER 9. (I tried using my IE 8 and it does not work, so I’m using Google Chrome.)

FIRST: Watch this ‘how to’ video for instructions on using the app

SECOND: Click on the link following for the article and under the video click on the green “Go To App”. Find out how much water you could capture in a year. Draw a box over your roof. You might be surprised!  Have some fun with this – enter the White House address or your own City Hall address and check out the results.

Description: On July 11, 2012, Ottawa City Council passed the new 2012 Green Building Promotion Program. Green buildings constitute high levels of environmental performance in design, construction and operation. Energy, water and resource efficiency are a key components of a Green Building. Harvesting rainwater or recycling grey water to irrigate lawns and flush toilets is a significant green building technique. The Save the Rain app facilitates the rainwater harvesting process by calculating annually how much rain can be captured from a rooftop.

The value it provides to residents: For centuries, people have collected rainwater for drinking, washing and irrigation purposes. With the advent of municipal water treatment, rainwater collection became less popular in urbanized centres, though water storage cisterns can still be found in old farmhouses across Canada. But recently, rainwater harvesting has experienced an increase in popularity in countries around the globe as a result of droughts, water shortages and the rising costs of drinking water and stormwater infrastructure. Canada, too, is experiencing an increase in rainwater harvesting for lawn and garden irrigation, and many municipalities have begun to offer rebates for rain barrels. But larger, more sophisticated systems that capture, store, treat and redirect greater quantities of rainwater for other uses are still relatively new. The Save the Rain app facilitates the rainwater harvesting design process by calculating annually how much rain can be captured from any rooftop. The Save the Rain app also displays the Ottawa communal well locations and associated water quality reports.

DEATH OF CANADIAN FORESTS – MOUNTAIN PINE BEETLE

PINE BEETLE CANADA

PINE BEETLE8GIMPBESTA natural disaster that is
going to occur across all of Canada!

I decided to take the time to Google “pine beetles in Canada” and now realize just how serious a threat the pine beetle is to our environment just from reading headings such as: ‘death of a forest’; ‘the threat of mountain pine beetle‘; ‘pine beetle threatening new B.C. tree species’; ‘pine beetle contributing to forest smog’;  ‘pine beetles contributing to climate change’, etc.

PINE BEETLE8GIMPBESTPine beetle damage extends from forests to drinking water.  The deep green pine trees of British Columbia’s great forests are turning a rusty red, thanks to the mountain pine beetle’s increasing resilience to warming winter temperatures. The grain-sized critter, which lives in the bark of mature trees, kills the trees within months, leaving the wood an ash grey colour once the pine needles fall out years later.  The mountain pine beetle’s devastation has spread over 20 per cent of British Columbia’s total area, costing the province $884 million. By 2014, it is projected that 80 per cent of the province’s pine forests will disappear, an outcome with unprecedented economic, social, and environmental consequences.

Here is a CBC News: The National video from Nelson, British Columbia, Canada, presented by Chris Brown – uploaded on Apr 24, 2008

The mountain pine beetle’s infestation in western Canada is turning forests into a new source of greenhouse gases, according to new research published in the journal Nature

PINE BEETLE COLORADOA recent study by the Colorado School of Mines shows that Colorado’s quality of local drinking water is also affected by the beetle.  Driven by climate change, mountain pine beetles are infesting pine wood in Colorado and releasing more carbon into watersheds. This changes how disinfectant chemicals interact with water during treatment, and in turn creates potentially harmful by-products.

PINE BEETLE CANADA1What does this mean for Canada’s west coast?  “The vast majority of British Columbia’s population lives far away from the pine beetle crisis,” says Brennan Clarke, media representative at British Columbia’s Ministry of Forests, Land and Natural Resource Operations (FLNRO). It’s unlikely that pine beetles will interact with drinking water resources, but FLNRO continues studying the beetle’s impact on regional hydrology.

PINE BEETLE8GIMPBESTThe damage to the ecosystem is already done with over four million devastated acres of forest in Colorado and Wyoming, where studies show changes in water chemistry and nitrate levels in watersheds, which can cause algae growth in downstream drinking water reservoirs. Risk of wildfires is another hazard to drinking water as water-resistant soils prevent water penetration.

Jim Bouldin, a research ecologist writing for RealClimate, says there is a “complex relationship between the beetles, weather, forest conditions, and tree chemistry.” – Erin Pelhivan, WaterCanada Jan/Feb. 3013 magazine ~ “Critters and Carbon“.

WOMENS’ WATER POLO GOLD ~ FIRST TIME WIN FOR USA!

WATER POLO ICON2Water polo made its Olympic debut at the Paris Games in 1900. It was not included in 1904, but would be present at each subsequent edition of the Olympic Games.

In the early days, the players rode on floating barrels that resembled mock horses, and swung at the ball with mallet-like sticks. This made it similar to equestrian polo, hence its name.
