Using risk assessment like those used setting occupational safety limits in the workplace , researchers have determined winners and losers of climate change in the Antarctic. They show that marine animals associated with sea ice for food or breeding such as whales or penguins are at most risk from climate change. Seafloor predators and open water feeding animals like starfish and jellyfish will benefit from the opening up of new habitat.
We see the loss of sea ice will have winners and losers. Krill..crustaceans whose young feed on the algae that forms under the sea ice will be vulnerable, in turn impacting the animals that feed on them, such as the chinstrap penguins and humpback whales. The emperor penguin will be at high risk because sea ice and shelves are its breeding habitat. The southern Right Whale feeds on a plankton that is found in open water and so will benefit.
There will be winners and losers in climate change…where will humans be?
