April?

Well – is it April tomorrow already? Wow, the older I get the faster time flies. We had a booth at both the GreenExpo and the Spring Home and Garden Show so the office has been busy. I guess I have been a little too preoccupied to notice that most of the snow is gone and the Canadian geese are back. If you’re like me, now is the time that thoughts turn to home improvement; spring cleaning, back yard clean-up, maybe even some new lawn chairs or a B-B-Q. How’s your water supply? Does it need a spring clean-up too?

If you weren’t able to visit us at the GreenExpo, go to

Learn something new every day……

It’s been a busy day today. The spring Home and Garden Show has started and Martin and Dave are both there, working hard. The phone has been unusually busy with calls and several people have stopped by the office. But the thing I am writing about today is a call I had from a really nice lady who I couldn’t help at the time she called. She was searching the Water Quality Associations Gold Seal Certified products and coudn’t find us. Well, some net surfing hours later, a few emails to head office and guess what? It’s simple – we’re there. I hope she checks this blog again cause now I can tell her: from the RainSoft website, click the Gold Seal Certificate, top right hand corner go to “Certified Products” and enter RainSoft in the “Brand Name” box. Voila! there we are – Aquion Water Treatment Products. It will tell you everything you want to know about what system removes what contaminant. Or you can just follow the link below.

Spring Homeshow 2011

Well, we just got through the GreenExpo and this weekend is the Ottawa Home and Garden Show. Come on out to Lansdowne Park, Ottawa from March 24-27 and visit the RainSoft booth for your chance to win a Reverse Osmosis System! Ottawa Home and Garden show

GreenExpo

I hope everyone has set aside the weekend of March 19th and 20th to visit the GreenExpo at Lansdowne Park! A homeshow full of environmentally friendly products, new inovations and green ideas. Listen to CFRA the week before for contest details on how you can win a RainSoft Reverse Osmosis system at the GreenExpo and do your part to rid the world of bottled water.

A Poem

I noticed that I have not blogged in several weeks. The problem is I’m not feeling overly serious today. It must be the lengthening days and the promise of spring (despite a forecast of snow tomorrow) that have me feeling as if I am 10. I want to play! So, instead of a serious article on water and our lack of clean, fresh water, how about a poem? A long time ago, in the B.C. comic strip written by Bobby Hart, I remember – at least I will do my best to remember – a poem about water!

When Hydrogen U met Oxygen Tech
The game had just begun.
Then Hydrogen racked up two quick points
And Oxygen still had none.
Suddenly Oxygen scored a point!
And thus it did remain:
At Hydrogen: 2 and Oxygen: 1
Called – because of rain.

Smart man that Bobby Hart – great comic strip. Today I will be thankful for water.

A recent CBC Marketplace broadcast

I just finished watching the CBC Marketplace episode on water purification, broadcast on Friday, January 28th – to be specific, on a company called Simply H2O. What can I say? We know these companies are out there and we do not condone their methods nor do we practice them.

To blow our own horn, RainSoft has been in business 57 years. Eternally Pure Water Systems and Martin Barrett, dealer of RainSoft products, has been servicing the Ottawa area for 11, almost 12 years. We have an A+ rating at the Better Business Bureau and won The Consumers’ Choice Award in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010! While I don’t believe in scare tactics I do find it hard to believe that CBC and the Canadian Government are giving us the whole truth.

What I do believe is that there is a growing population who are questioning the conventional wisdom and who are not taking anything we currently do as gospel. They are intelligent friends and neighbours who have the capacity to do their own research and make their own decisions. So, when it comes to chlorine in your water – is it safe? I’m not sure I would want to send water through the city infrastructure without chlorine but that doesn’t mean it’s safe for me to drink. As for “trihalomethanes” – I looked them up on Wikipedia and I’m going to do some more research ’cause what I read there was not reassuring. Fluoride? – I’ve blogged plenty about that already.

You know, we just do the best we can with the knowledge we have, and when we know better, we do better. Problem is, not all of us are on the same page when it comes to these issues. If you think you need a Reverse Osmosis System for your home, or any other water purification system for that matter, we hope you won’t let the con artists and deceitful sway your opinion. Do the research, check us out, give us a call – we’re not going anywhere.

Navigating through the Facts with Pharmaceuticals and Drinking Water

There has been a recent groundswell from independent researchers and consumers questioning the risks and long-term effects of pharmaceuticals in drinking water. With national awareness at an all-time high, Rainsoft has provided a fact sheet for its dealers and their customers to provide clarity around the concerns of pharmaceutical compounds in drinking water. This fact sheet outlines the most commonly asked questions and provides answers that have been put forth from the Water Quality Association (WQA) and NSF International (the National Sanitation Foundation).

more on fluoride

If the excerpt I quoted earlier was not enough to convince you about the archaic practise of putting fluoride in water then may you would like to know that the NRC did a study in 2006 about “Fluoride in drinking water: a scientific review of EPA standards”. Guess what they found out? That adding any fluoride to the drinking water was not in the interest of public health! Surprise, surprise, surprise. I have attached three reports from committee members. See what you think.

Our Water (continued)

con’t excerpt from Bottom Line’s Power Aging by Gary Null

“Waterborne microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses constitute a large class of pollutants, and while chlorine does kill many, others of these disease-causers – particularly protozoan parasites such as giardia and cryptospordium – can live in a chlorinated environment. Toxic minerals and metals are a third class of water pollutant. These include aluminum, asbestos, cadmium, and mercury. A toxic metal that can leach into water from old pipes is lead, which will accumulate in the body until it causes health problems.

Organic chemicals from fertilizers, pesticides, and fuels are a tremendous problem in water supplies. We’ve already mentioned volatile organic chemicals, or VOCs, in relation to air pollution, but they’re in water too. Benzene, from such sources as paint removers and plastics, is a common example of this type of pollutant, which can cause harm to the nervous system, among other bodily systems that are extremely important to our functioning. Other organic chemicals, the polychlorinated biphenols, or PCBs, are notorious carcinogens that have been illegally released by industry into our waterways. Lastly, our water can be contaminated by radioactive substances that come from mining, nuclear power plant discharge water, and other sources.

While we can’t clean up the nation’s water supply at this moment, the good news is that you can screen out these pollutants from your own personal supply. Home filtration systems are effective.”

Food for thought…….
